FlixBus (often confused with Flexibus, company ... which does not exist!) was founded in Germany in 2011 by 3 young entrepreneurs wishing to offer a long distance bus service to travel at low prices. The first coaches circulate from 2013 in a context of the opening of the German market which quickly becomes hyper-competitive. In 2015, FlixBus merges with the bus company MeinFernBus and becomes, with 90% of market share, the main mobility operator of the country.

FlixBus in the UK

Flixbus only serves the capital London from Continental Europe (Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, ...) with arrivals and departure at the Victoria bus station.

FlixBus in Europe

FlixBus has the ambition to cover the whole of Europe, as far as possible (some countries still remain in a monopoly situation). As a result, it is building a European-wide network and offering its services in France, Italy, Austria, Croatia, the Netherlands and Belgium. It also offers cross-border links in Spain, Portugal, Poland and more generally in Eastern Europe.

Book your ticket

The best is of course to find your ticket on Vivanoda, partner of FlixBus, and this until 15 minutes before the departure time. It is also possible to buy your ticket directly from the bus driver, but be careful because in general, no reduction is granted, and prices may be more expensive.

Ticket format

When you make your reservation, you will receive your tickets electronically as an attachment to the confirmation email. It is also possible to make a reservation for a friend or a relative, and transfer the document thereafter.

FlixBus considers any person over the age of 16 as "adult" and "under the age of 16" as a "child". The company can differentiate fare based on the age of the person, but not always.

Cancel and change your FlixBus reservation

Any cancellation or modification of your booking can be made up to 15 minutes before the departure time.

If you change your ticket for another trip, the fare may be higher. In this case, you will simply have to pay the difference.

Cancel your FlixBus booking

Same procedure as for the modification, but the refund is in the form of a voucher of the same value as the ticket canceled. Be careful because a cancellation fee may apply. They depend on the period between the date of cancellation and the date of departure:

Presentation and boarding

You must take the bus at the departure stop indicated on your ticket. In some cities, there are several stops served by the same bus, but be careful because you are not allowed to change your boarding stop. The risk is to see your reservation get cancelled.

It is recommended to be present between 15 minutes and 30 minutes before the departure time. If you are late, the bus will not wait for you. If the bus is late, an SMS message will be sent to you with an estimate of the new departure time.

Travel with correspondence

If you have booked a bus ticket that requires changing buses and you miss your connection after the delay of the first trip, FlixBus automatically finds you a seat in another bus.

On Vivanoda, you may need to book a combined ticket, which is, a part of the trip is operated by FlixBus and the other part is by another bus company. In this case, the correspondence is not assured and it is therefore recommended to provide a comfortable transfer time to deal with any unforeseen circumstances.

It's the same if you combine a FlixBus ticket with a train or plane ticket, and because of the bus delay, you miss your flight / train.

Onboard services and comfort

The FlixBus fleet of coaches is new and is equipped with comfortable seats where emphasis has been placed on the available legroom, which will delight the tallest travellers.

The buses also have an air conditioning system, very useful for long trips in summer. A WiFi connection and electrical outlets also allow you to use your smartphone or laptop without limitation.

Luggage policy

You can travel with carry-on luggage and a suitcase to put in the hold of the coach. All luggage must be labeled with your name and address. The weight of the bag must not exceed 20Kg and its size must respect the dimensions 80 x 50 x 30cm or the sum of the three does not exceed 160cm.

If you have another suitcase with you, it will be charged £ 2 extra. For luggage or parcels with particular dimensions, it is not always possible to carry them by bus. It depends on the available space.

Choose your seat

We do not always like to be placed at the rear of the bus or next to the toilets, for example, and we would like to make sure that all our preferences are met for a great trip. However, when booking, the allocation of seats is done automatically. But a paid option (but not very expensive) allow you to select your seat. Its cost is £1.5 per standard seat. On double-decker buses, some seats are more expensive to book because they offer a better travel experience: those located at the front called "Panorama" (£ 4 per seat) and those located on the ground floor with a table (£ 2 per seat).

Travelling with your bike

You can take your bike for the bus ride. It will be disassembled or folded in a special cover and stored in the luggage compartment. In summer, some coaches are equipped with a bicycle box at the back. Transport of your bike is not free. It will cost you £ 9 which will be paid to the driver. Its weight must be less than 25Kg. Of course, you have to travel with him.

Travelling with an animal

Like most bus companies, FlixBus does not accept any pets on board its coaches. An exception is made for visually impaired persons whose presence of a guide dog by their side is essential.

Travelling with a child or baby

If you are travelling with your child under the age of 3, it is imperative that you bring a car seat to hang with a seat belt during the entire journey.

Travelling as a minor under 16

If you are between 10 and 16 years old, you can travel alone but only in your country and with the necessary authorizations issued by your legal representatives. If you want to go abroad, you will not be able to do it alone. A person over 18 must travel with you.

Access with limited mobility

Anyone with a disability can travel on Flixbus buses.

  • If you are visually impaired, your guide dog will be able to accompany you. He will travel for free with a reserved place. This is the only case where animals are allowed. Online booking is not possible.
  • If you are in a wheelchair but can store it in the trunk of the bus, you can travel on all lines of the network, there are no restrictions and you can book your ticket online.
  • If you absolutely must have your chair in the cockpit of the bus, be aware that not all buses are equipped for this. You must therefore contact FlixBus customer service no later than 7 days before the date of the trip to ensure that you can travel in the best conditions. Online booking is not possible.
  • If you must be accompanied by a person during your trip, this person will not be charged (with proof).
In any case, once your ticket purchased, you will have to contact the customer service no later than 36 hours before your departure.
